Sometimes viral is not about leads, it might be about something that will produce leads down the road – brand or linkbuilding (for SEO) or for gathering more email contacts or social media connections.

I also agree a ton with your #1 point about knowing the goals. Sharing a recommendation, exposure or --even better--link love is always appreciated.

Judd – big lesson learned from watching and listening the folks on Twitter. As I mentioned in the post, YouTube viewers have a short attention span so shock and awe in that timeframe is a must. Definitely promote the sharing by making it easy, but also focus on the community aspects. After all, once you attract a large following to your content, you want the right visitors to stick around for more. Make it easy for them to become a fan of your Facebook group/application or subscribe to your RSS feed. Give them several options.

Mike- Agree with both points. Everybody likes recognition, even if it's just a quick mention.

What a thorough and thoughtful post!

I especially like the point about including others in your content. (1) have something shocking or funny in the first 10 seconds of the video, this helps miantain viewer attention
(2) make it easy to share - you can add Tweet It buttons and other buttons around the content - this has worked very well for the marketing cartoons we have doneI also agree a ton with your #1 point about knowing the goals. Sometimes viral is not about leads, it might be about something that will produce leads down the road - brand or linkbuilding (for SEO) or for gathering more email contacts or social media connections (facebook fans or twitter followers) - so just be clear from the start what the goals are, it will help you develop the right campaign.

Awesome post.
